Synopsis
I Don’t Want to Kill Myself tells the story of James Scofield, a 22 year old college drop out completely bored with life. He has one friend, Coop, who is as directionless as he is, though Coop alternatively doesn’t seem to mind. James lives with his older sister and their relationship is James’ closest at the open of the film.. One night James gets a call from Coop explaining that he has been pulled over for speeding while drunk. To avoid having the cop figure out that he’s drunk, he tells the officer that he is speeding because James has just threatened to commit suicide. The cop realizing that a life is in jeopardy decides to give Coop an escort to his friend’s house. Coop convinces James to pretend to kill himself to keep him out of trouble, however when the police arrive at his house everything goes terribly wrong and James winds up in the hospital with a broken arm and under suicide watch. He is “sentenced” by the in-house psychiatrist to a group for recovering suicidals until he has been deemed stable with no risk of future attempts. Within the group James befriends Cody a quirky 19 year old, who is chronically depressed to the point of actually seeming happy (life is a joke to him,) Emily, a difficult and headstrong intellectual 23 year old, who has as much style as she does attitude. Throughout the next few weeks, James finds himself growing in ways he never anticipated, and realizes that the one place in his life that he doesn’t belong, may actually be his home.
